Helen Crawford

Helen Crawford is a textile and mixed media artist, living at the foot of the Malvern Hills. Helen studied textiles during teacher training at Avery Hill College, later completing City & Guilds Embroidery at Malvern Hills College. In 2003, she graduated with an HNC in Stitched Textiles from Gloucester College of Art and Technology, where she began exploring the expressive possibilities of silk paper—now a signature element of her work.

Helen takes much of her inspiration from seasonal changes and atmospheric light noticed on walks in favourite unspoilt places, including woodlands on the Malvern Hills, and wild coastlines of the Outer Hebrides and Cornwall. She explores shifting light, colours, and textures of the natural world using blends of silk paper, acrylic on felt, stitch, collage, watercolour, and mixed media to produce evocative framed landscapes, seascapes, and birch tree studies.

Helen's sketchbooks are filled with watercolour, ink and dry media drawings and paintings, which play an important part in the development of her distinctive paintings, prints and textiles.  She dyes silk fibres, to enrich painted felt and make silk paper backgrounds, which she embellishes with machine embroidery and collage to create exciting surfaces.

Helen is a member of Far Open and takes part in the Far Open Art Trail and Herefordshire Art Week.  She has won 4 People's Choice Awards in the h-Art Open Exhibition and Crickhowell Open Competition and 2 People's Choice Awards in the Herefordshire Open Competition.
