Karen has a meandering background in creativity, beginning as a TV Producer in London and the States primarily in music, filming concerts and documentaries with great Artists such as Prince, Stevie Wonder and Robbie Williams.  

She chose to leave media around 12 years later and after a few years living in Greece, began designing and building houses with her husband in Cornwall.  They  built 3 in succession and lived "feral" for most of those years.  

Tragically, Karen's husband developed Early Onset Dementia and after some devastating years caring for him through lockdown, Karen  decided to study Interior Design.  During her studies she began an evening course in Hand Building Clay and her obsession was borne.

Karen is self taught, preferring to stumble across ‘mistakes’ as an essential part of her process.  She begins with a large block of clay and whilst she may have a general notion of the person she's creating, the sculpture and individual personality unfolds as it evolves.

Karen currently has two bodies of work in the gallery, the first is entitled ‘Sacred Movement’. She went to a performance of Whirling Dervishes in Istanbul some years ago and was enchanted by their tranquility and Divinity. Her second series 'Punk Dogs' represent the joyful and fun nature of Karen's personality. Whilst very separate subjects, the familiarity of form and finish is clearly evident through all of her pieces.

Each sculpture  takes around 25 hours to create and is then dried for around 3 weeks before being Bisque fired.  The glaze is then applied  and then fired again.  Karen likes many of her works to look antiquated, as if they have been dug up from the 13th Century

‘Karen’s work is unique .. her process in engaging movement in an unyielding form is intriguing and beguiling.  Her intrinsic insight in to her process - be it a Whirling Dervish or a Flamenco dancer - portrays her passion that is translated in to her sculptures.  Being self taught, her sculptures escape confines and restrictions.  There is an abundant energy in her work’.
