Lesley Brankin
Lesley is a painter who through line, stroke, and gesture, uses mark-making to distil observation into its essential form. Working primarily in ink and acrylic, occasionally augmenting with collage, print, or stitch, she allows process and material to shape each piece. She employs improvised and found tools - fragments of old credit cards, sponges, and gathered materials - with the occasional use of a brush, to give her work its distinctive physical energy.
A strong sense of place underpins her practice, inspired by walks in and around the Malvern Hills. Working en plein air, she records immediate responses in sketchbooks and responsibly gathers natural materials that later inform studio pieces. With a background as an award-winning textile artist, she brings a refined sensitivity to surface and process.
Moving beyond literal representation, Lesley seeks to capture the essence of a place or object. Through an intuitive use of shape, colour, texture, and experimental techniques, she evokes atmosphere and feeling suggesting not only how a subject looks but also how it is experienced.
Lesley is a member of Creatives Connect Malvern and the Malvern Hills–based exhibiting group Artstrands
