Tia Lambert
Tia has lived at the foot of the Malvern Hills since 1985. She tries, in her paintings, to convey the feeling of being up on the hills in fresh air. She returns time and again to favourite locations to see and capture the way that the ever-changing light at different times of day, in all weathers and throughout the seasons can transform the landscape.
With a love of wildflowers and inspired by natural forms, white frothy Hogweed has become a recurring theme in the summer months.
Tia works outside directly from the landscape whenever possible to inject a fresh contemporary feel to her paintings while using traditional techniques. For sketching She uses a dip pen and ink washes, a lively medium. She is drawn to the light at particular times of day, dawn and dusk, so uses photographs and sketches to capture transitory effects which she then paints back in the studio.
Tia begins by drawing loosely in blue paint on the canvas. This eventually disappears under washes of colour, in turn defined by further drawing, the two intertwined. She likes there to be movement, to let the landscape breathe rather than be tied down by too much detail and tends to exaggerate rather than understate colour.
Tia trained at Farnham (BA Hons) and the Royal Academy Schools, London, postgraduate 82-85. She was a tutor for 23 years at Malvern Hills College. Tia has exhibited widely both locally and nationally including Iapetus, Worcestershire Open Studios and the RA Summer Show.
